Welcome!

Welcome to the first installment of Bower's World!  I started this blog because of a grad class I am in, and will plan on using this for all kinds of interesting conversations and ideas.  I am a 26 year old teacher in a middle school in Virginia, and have been there for four years.  It has definitely been a unique experience.  As our principal has said since we moved into our new building 2 years ago, we have "gone from a trailer park to a mansion."  Our school is filled with all the top technology including SmartBoards in each room, mobile carts of laptops, wireless networking and a whole bunch of other stuff that really makes teaching fun.

Outside of the classroom, I find myself having a hectic schedule. I coach baseball in spring, and even in the fall sometimes, as well as coaching an Odyssey of the Mind team, and building the stage for the musical, while taking time to complete a master's in education, all within the course of a week. I'm not complaining, if my schedule was not so packed, I'd be bored.

Sounds like we have a lot in common! I, too, am a Middle School Science teacher - great age - great subject! In your school in Virginia, what constitutes middle school? I have taught middle school Science in Cleveland Public Schools, where middle meant only 7th and 8th grades. I have also taught in private schools, where middle school meant 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

As part of our graduate courses through Walden (another commonality), I will be blogging on my blog, as well as watching yours for interesting updates!

Did you find it difficult or frustrating to set up your blog? I have to admit, that I did at first. However, after I was able to spend some time playing with it, I was able to then relax and get a little creative.

Another thing we have in common is our hectic schedules. I currently homeschool my 3 children in grades 2nd, 6th and 8th. I tutor both corporately and privately, I am an advisor for my church's youth group, have two wrestling boys and volunteer to work the weekly matches, and, oh yeah, the graduate courses! Just like you, however, I am not complaining, if I didn't have a schedule like this, it wouln't be long until I did - it keeps me out of trouble and keeps me young!

Looking forward to sharing ideas with you on how to implement all this technology into our Science classrooms.

  2. Wow, I was actually surprised to have a comment today on my blog! As far as the setup process, I didn't have much of a problem setting it up, but then again, I've done it before.

In Virginia, middle school is 6-8, and I've found that of them all, 7th graders here tend to be the most hyper.

  3. I think it must be national - if not universal - 7th graders are just plain high energy!!!

  4. I also did a blog in the classroom involving a novel that we were reading in class. At first the students used the blog site for the purpose that was intended. They creatively wrote responses to questions and were very appropriate when stating their opinion. As time went on, they started to use the site as an e-mail to discuss their problems. Two girls in my class were upset with each other and began to discuss their issues through the blog instead of verbally. I was amazed at how they were able to get their message to each other while still applying it to the topic that they were supposed to be discussing. Since I was the administrator of the blog, I would not approve their comments for posting until it was appropriate so the other students would not read them. This class is a 12th grade special needs unit with many “at risk” students. I believe that this activity would have been more successful in a different environment.
