The hardest part of my tasks this week was to find out how to create a podcast in the most effective way I can. I started by learning how to use GarageBand on my computer, and tried to learn the basic setup. So far, I have not had too many problems, and have made a nice short audio track that has some added sounds for effects. From here, I think it is necessary to learn how to combine the audio track with a video (probably using iMovie) and post that to a website.
What I would like to do in the future is learn how to create a flash video for a website since they are smaller and take up less server space. I have started to record some of the notes I present in class in short segments using my SmartBoard, and will need to learn to combine the video with audio so I can create the video podcasts. Overall I am quite confident in what I have done so far, and think that I should be able to construct a variety of podcasts starting with my unit on DNA which started Monday. I want to create one by the end of the week focusing on how mutations are made, and what they can do to a protein’s function.
Overall, I am interested in learning more and want to find the simplest and easiest wa to do what I can to make high quality podcasts that the students can use to help them learn the concepts we are discussing in class.
Travis,
ReplyDeleteYour ideas sound great! I know that in iMovie you can export those as a QuickTime movie and share them directly with a website. I don't know much about flash videos but would be interested in learning. If you begin to use those, please keep me informed of how they work. One of the nice things about podcasts is that once you have created them, they are there. You don't need to re-record the information each year. Students can benefit from them for years to come.

Thanks, I'll have to look into it. The problem with iMovie that I am working with is that the files I want to use to create it are from a different format and won't convert it, so I'm trying to figure out how to go from there.
ReplyDeleteI did make a voicethread using my phone and the record option on the smartboard, take a look:

Travis,
ReplyDeleteThe progress you are making is great. I agree with Ginger in that I would like to know what you find with the flash videos. Have your students had any problem viewing what you have made available for them? Sometimes my students are having difficulty viewing powerpoint files that I have placed on my website to help them.

Hi Travis,
ReplyDeleteYou have some really good ideas about podcasting. Good luck with the flash video problem...I wish I had some suggestions to offer on how to create them. Regarding your podcasts, if you start creating high-quality recordings, have you considered posting them on iTunes for public consumption. iTunes has a tremendous education section in their store that you should check out. It would offer your students a good way to download them to their iPods and be able to listen to your instructional material at their leisure.
Mr. Bower,
ReplyDeleteYour voicethread was the best educational use I have seen yet. I am intrigued with vooicethread but do not have the hang of the drawing device yet. I left a question on your voicethread. Good job!
